Orlando Museum of Art focuses on interpreting and presenting art that spans many areas and styles, including collections of ancient and contemporary African and American artwork. The museum also hosts an event on the first Thursday of each month from 6 to 9 p.m. that encourages appreciation for the visual arts and introduces new artwork created by local artists.
A unique collaboration, five museums comprise the Art and History Museums Maitland just minutes from Downtown Orlando. The Maitland Art Center has contemporary art exhibitions in the galleries, two residency programs for professional artists, and art programming. Visitors can take a guided tour of the Waterhouse Residence Museum, which is a restored home from the late Victorian period built by pioneer William H. Waterhouse. Constructed around 1883, the Carpentry Shop Museum is the site of Waterhouse’s woodworking and construction business and features a permanent collection of tools used in the beginning of the twentieth century. Learn about the communication technology and history of the telephone with hands-on displays at The Telephone Museum. Or, visit the Maitland Historical Museum, which offers permanent exhibits that illustrate Florida’s history and how it parallels the American experience.
The Albin Polasek Museum is dedicated to the internationally known Czech-American sculptor Albin Polasek. The Polasek is a living museum, with outdoor sculpture gardens dating back to 1949. The three-acre garden is an oasis within the City of Winter Park and features over 200 pieces of artwork in what used to be Polasek’s home. The museum also features a rotating collection of works by other artists from all over the world.
The Cornell Fine Arts Museum is located on the Rollins College campus and overlooks Lake Virginia. There are over 5,500 works that range in style and era from Renaissance to modern pieces so that all visitors can learn to appreciate art from different periods and cultures. The museum also has several programs that are tailored to meet the needs of all visitors from kindergarten to adults and family-centered programs.
